Boatyards
Bullock Island Boatyard
Commissioned in 2005 and located on Bullock Island at Lakes Entrance immediately adjacent to the entrance channel to Bass Strait, the Bullock Island boatyard facility is ideally situated to provide services to larger vessels up to 100 tonne.
The boatyard travel lift can transport vessels up to 100 tonne whilst the powerful hydroblaster pressure cleaner makes quick work of cleaning hulls. The facility also houses a maintenance jetty for approved in-water works.
All boat slipping, lifting and re-launching activities are supervised by qualified personnel. The boatyard can also load/unload vessels to/from road transport and arrange launching of the vessel at the site.
The boatyard can provide in-house maintenance services, however, owners and/or contractors can perform maintenance tasks after completing induction training.
Paynesville Boatyard
Conveniently located on prime water frontage at Paynesville, which is renown as the leisure boating capital of the Gippsland Lakes, the facility provides vessel owners with a major boat launching and retrieval facility, consisting of a 120 tonne slipway and a 40 tonne vessel lift.
To complement this service, the boatyard also has the most comprehensive boat maintenance and repair facilities in the region. Well fitted out workshops enable the highly skilled staff to undertake most types of boat repairs and service. The commitment to the environment was recognised in 2003 by being the recipient of the Victorian Coastal Award for Excellence for the innovative waste management program. This has since been enhanced with the installation during 2008 of a state of the art waste treatment plant that was successful in achieving the Victorian Marine Industry Environmental Award 2008.
On site expert staff includes fully qualified shipwrights, fitters, welders, travel lift operators and painters. Alternatively customers may provide their own labour or contractors under certain conditions for work on boats in cradles or fit-out berths.
All Boatyard activities meet the requirements of the OH&S Act 2006, whilst contractors and owners working on site are also required to comply with these standards.
A wide range of specialist boating equipment and service providers are located within Paynesville’s marine precinct within 400 metres of the boatyard.
Vessel Slipping Facilities
Gippsland Ports operates a significant slipway facility at Port Welshpool. Two smaller slipway facilities are located at Mallacoota and Port Franklin.
The Port Welshpool Slipway is ideally located at Port Welshpool, and provides access to a significant slipway with a capacity of 50 tonne. Depending on size and draft of vessel, access to the slip may be restricted by tidal conditions, requiring any booking to coincide with tidal movements. The work able to be performed is generally undertaken by owners or contracted services. There are no limitations to the extent of works that can be undertaken other than those operations that constitute an uncontrolled risk. A formal induction process identifying the OH&S management requirements for the site is prerequisite to undertaking any works at this facility. The operations are overseen by the local Port Manager who arranges to slip and launch vessels.
The Mallacoota Slipway (capacity 16 tonne) is located adjacent to the main Wharf, with easy access to the facility. The work permitted to be performed here is limited to pressure cleaning of hulls, painting and certain repair/maintenance activities. The operations are overseen by a local contractor who slips and re-launches vessels based on prior bookings. Owners and/or contractors perform their own maintenance or repair works.
The Port Franklin Slipway (capacity 8 tonne with a maximum length of 10 metres) is operated by Gippsland Ports using a contractor to perform the lifting and standing operation. The work permitted to be performed here is limited to pressure cleaning of hulls, painting and certain repair/maintenance activities. Bookings can be made initially by contacting the Paynesville Boatyard on 03 5156 6352. Owners and/or contractors perform their own maintenance or repair works on vessels slipped at this site.
